GreenLeft (/GroenLinks/) was founded in 1989 by fusion of four leftist parties:
- the Communist Party of the Netherlands (/Communistische Partij Nederland/),
- the Pacifist Socialist Party (/Pacifistisch Socialistische Partij/),
- the Political Party of Radicals (/Politieke Partij Radikalen/), and
- the Evangelical People's Party (/Evangelische Volksparti/).
Its name, originally spelt as two words, spells since 1992 as one
word, but with the initial letters of both component words
capitalized. The party is a member of the Global Greens and the European
Green Party.

Flag
GreenLeft uses a vertically divided red-green flag, with the party
emblem in center. The emblem is a large white-bordered green disc,
with a representation of sunrise in white and a white stripe over the
sun rays, which is charged with two rows of text, party name at the
top, painted in a "counter-colored" manner (*GROEN* in red and *LINKS*
in green), and the motto *ZIN IN DE TOEKOMST* (literally, "Meaning in
the future") at the bottom, in green colour. At the
party website:
shades of red and green are defined as the RGB values of 221-0-49 and
130-188-0, respectively. Photos of the flag can be found
here.
